Village House; An Interfaith Shelter of Hope serves exness as a place of refuge for homeless, medically-fragile women. Village House and our partners address the needs of these women through the provision of food, shelter, hygiene services, spiritual support, as well as a part-time case manager who is the coordinator of social services for our guests. Through the support of our local religious assemblies and their volunteers, our goal is to provide these vulnerable women with a caring, loving environment while attempting to stabilize their lives so that they may move beyond their homelessness.
Our opportunity to take action arrived on December 8, 2015, when the San Jose City Council eased regulations allowing churches to shelter the exness broker homeless for limited stretches of time by removing permitting requirements. We successfully initiated our proposed 4-month program the second week of January 2016, with five faith communities participating. In tandem, four local congregations opened day centers to provide daytime shelter.
Today, Village House is in the process of developing a sustainable year round rotating shelter. Our vision is that a network of churches will provide a year-round rotating shelter for up to 15 medically fragile women. The network will ideally include 12 overnight shelters coordinated with day centers.
Additional exness sign up facilities and volunteers are needed, and we invite all interested Santa Clara County residents to join this effort. See the Volunteer page for how you can sign up to participate in this worthy cause.
